I'm still fairly new in the programming world (3 years out of uni), so I have much to learn, but I would strongly recommend taking the time to draw out a complete plan before you start implementation. I've yet to run into my first hiccup (knock on wood), and I'm weeks ahead of schedule. The result has been that everything has come out extremely smoothly. I spent about two weeks developing a highly detailed implementation plan, during which I got good feedback from many of the more senior programmers in my company. The more recent project was completely different. There was even one point where I had to go back and completely re-write one portion of my project which lost me a week of my own time. The result was a lot of "oh shoot, I didn't think of this, I need to go and change this, or handle this". I had a rough idea of what I was doing in my head, but I didn't write much down. The first project I kind of just jumped into it. In the past year or so, I've had two "babies" that I was developing by myself. I've found that having a well structured plan ahead of time also helps. The big one is taking breaks to avoid burnout. ![]()
